A Memorial Tree Planting to Celebrate a Life Dedicated to Our Urban Forest

At General Tree Service, we believe that trees represent strength, growth, and legacy. Few people embodied those values more than Melissa Kay Iger, whose passion for our community and its urban forest touched countless lives throughout Kern County.

Melissa served as Director of the Tree Foundation of Kern for eight years, dedicating her time, energy, and leadership to protecting and growing the local tree canopy. Her work helped shape a greener, healthier environment for residents across Bakersfield and the surrounding communities. Through her commitment, she inspired volunteers, educated the public, and strengthened the importance of trees as an essential part of our community’s future.

A Living Tribute to a Lasting Legacy

On April 22, in honor of Melissa’s life and contributions, General Tree Service was proud to participate in a Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony celebrating her legacy.

As part of the tribute, our team carefully removed a declining Sycamore tree and planted a beautiful 48-inch box Valley Oak, generously donated by the Tree Foundation. The Valley Oak was selected not only for its beauty but for its strength and longevity—qualities that reflect Melissa’s lasting influence.

This newly planted tree will stand as a living memorial, growing stronger year after year, just as Melissa’s impact continues to shape the community she cared so deeply about.

Continuing the Mission She Championed

Our owner, Conway Lopez, had the privilege of knowing Melissa for 28 years. Their shared dedication to tree care, environmental stewardship, and community service built a strong professional and personal connection over nearly three decades.

Following Melissa’s passing, Conway has stepped into the role of Director of the Tree Foundation of Kern, continuing the mission she led with such passion. This transition represents not only continuity, but a promise—to carry forward the work Melissa believed in and to ensure her vision for a greener community continues to thrive.

Remembering a Champion for Trees and Community

Melissa Kay Iger’s contributions went far beyond planting trees. She helped build awareness, inspire action, and foster a deeper appreciation for the role trees play in improving air quality, reducing heat, beautifying neighborhoods, and supporting environmental sustainability.

Her leadership strengthened the Tree Foundation of Kern and helped create meaningful programs that will benefit generations to come. The memorial tree planted in her honor symbolizes more than remembrance—it represents growth, resilience, and hope for the future.

A Legacy That Will Continue to Grow

At General Tree Service, we are honored to have played a role in commemorating Melissa’s life and contributions. The Valley Oak planted in her memory will serve as a daily reminder of her dedication to our urban forest and the community she loved.

Melissa’s legacy lives on not only through the trees she helped plant, but through the people she inspired and the mission she championed.

As that Valley Oak grows, so too will the impact of her work—rooted deeply in the soil of our community and reaching toward the future for generations to come.

In memory of Melissa Kay Iger — your legacy will continue to grow. 🌳💚
